Seven figures, three men and four women, all in white bandages, are performing in a luminous circle of light. People gather around in silence, waiting for the act to begin. A crimson red vessel filled with wine stands as a focal point of ritualistic significance.
The performance commences with a potent act of communion: the first performer drinks the wine—a sanguine metaphor—from the vessel, initiating an intimate, oral transference to the next participant, going all the way around. This act is a reference to The Last Supper, when Jesus gathered his disciples and said: “This bread is my body,” and “This wine is my blood.”
After 7 circles of this act, a discord emerges. A dissenter, marked by a refusal to partake, becomes the locus of societal aggression, manifested in a collective monotonous sound.
The performance ends after the collective turns feral, with pieces of meat being thrown inside the circle.
Conceptualized by artist Anna Timofeeva and realized through the collaborative efforts of the Pivot 7 Team, this performance art piece serves as a poignant commentary on societal conformity and ostracism. Timofeeva's work interrogates the fragile boundary between civilization and savagery, illustrating the precarious nature of social inclusion and the swift retribution faced by those who deviate from established norms.
The symbolic use of blood as a connective tissue between individuals underscores the paradoxical nature of human interaction—capable of both profound unity and brutal division. The devolution of the stage into a chaotic amalgam of humanity, wine, and meat serves as a representation of our latent animalistic tendencies, ever-ready to surface in the face of provocation or temptation.
This performance thus stands as a powerful allegory for the human condition, challenging viewers to confront the tenuous nature of social cohesion and the primal forces that lurk beneath the veneer of civility.
